Corner of Cranberry and Henry
Location: Corner of Cranberry and Henry Street
Time: slightly after a reasonable bedtime
Incident: not quite sure, but it involved a man hanging from a tree trying to remove a locked bike from a street sign. His cohort in crime had the bike lifted over his head so the tree hanger could slide the bike lock over the top of the sign. There were 4-5 others standing around to provide moral support. By the sound of the cheer as I continued to walk towards Clark Street, I think they were successful. I don't expect to see the bike on my walk to the subway tomorrow.
Was the bike being stolen? Was it owned by the tree hanger? Was it owned by tree hanger's friend, who is in for a big surprise tomorrow?

a friend of mine told me how once here in Tübingen he lent a friend the keys to his apartment, forgetting that the key to his bike lock was also on the key chain. When he wanted to go home he had no way to unlock his bike, so he just picked it up and carried it home, and no one that he passed said a word! Either the people figured that anyone stupid enough to carry a locked bike in public must own it, or they just didn't care. All I know is I try to lock my bike to the nearest secured object (tree, bike rack, signpost!!) :-)

Yes, my daughter still has her midwest trust and sensibility.
However, a picture of this ordeal would have been worth a thousand words and possibly could also have been used in a court of law as evidence!!!!

"Anonymous" is right. Stephanie has stolen at least two bikes using THIS EXACT TECHNIQUE!

Well if Stephanie is stealing bikes like this, the next logical question is who's the tall guy helping her lift them over the pole? Hmmmmm....
